It’s not exactly a conventional prom look… but as gorgeous Gossip Girl Blake Lively proves, the perfect little black dress can definitely help you stand out on the red carpet (especially if everyone else has gone for full-on tulle and tiaras). The trick is to aim for a striking silhouette and let the frock do the talking – a dramatically flared overskirt and classic bolero (Monsoon’s is lovely) can instantly transform a smart-but-dull clingy number into a sizzling sensation! When it comes to accessorising, think simple and classy. Strappy sandals and sparkly chains won’t do your outfit any favours – instead, choose an uber-sophisticated pair of courts and striking statement jewellery, like the oversized rings Blake is sporting.
Of course, Ms Lively will have had an army of stylists at work on her up-do before posing for the paps… but a smart chignon is actually incredibly easy to achieve without any help at all. The top tip is not to wash your hair on the big day itself – do it the night before. Then, when you’re ready to put it up, simply brush it through and pull into a loose ponytail, which you can twist into a tight spiral and coil round itself, pinning as you go. Pull a few wisps forward, to frame your face.
